as we get closer and closer to the summer, the anxiety and body image issues start creeping up (if they aren't already happening constantly)
with summer comes shorts, wearing bathing suits, and tank tops. and a lot of us have low self confidence and self image issues.
with this comes body dysmorphia. body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder characterized by the obsessive idea that some aspect of one's body is severely flawed and warrants measures to hide or fix that aspect.
while body dysmorphia is an extreme end of the spectrum, it can appear in many ways. some people don't feel comfortable in shorts because they don't like the way their legs look or how big their thighs are. some people don't like wearing tank tops because their chest is too big or they think their arms are too flabby.
believe me, I struggle with these things too. and I think a lot of it comes with the society that we have made ourselves. we are lead to believe that if we aren't super thin and fit, then we are fat. and if we don't exercise daily, we are harming ourselves. we've been taught to not eat so much or we'll gain weight easily. obsessing over one's body isn't new, its been around since the beginning of time.
being comfortable in one's own skin is something that some people don't even achieve in their lifetime. it is a constant battle within one's brain to be better and thinner and healthier. and I think I can safely say a lot of us aren't showing ourselves compassion or love.
learning self love is something that can change the way you view yourself. self love is:
"being in love with every part of yourself--body and personality. knowing that you are number one."
self love isn't something that we are born with. it often takes years to learn. we must learn to be gentle with ourselves and that we aren't perfect. we are human and make mistakes. self love is something that is essential to living a happy healthy life. self love often takes diligence and patience.
some affirmations we can tell ourselves daily to practice self love:
I am capable of doing hard things
I have what it takes
I am growing and learning everyday
I am exactly where I need to be
I am worthy to be loved and cherished
I have so much to offer the world
summer time affirmations of body positivity:
I appreciate my body and what it does for me
I am beautiful inside and out
I am growing comfortable in my own skin
I feel at home in my own body
I care for my body in positive and healthy ways
I speak loving and kind words to my body daily
don't beat yourself up if self love doesn't come easily. I am still learning too. I know it's hard, but it's okay if your pant size gets bigger. it's okay if shirts that fit for years are getting too small. I know it can be frustrating and scary, I've felt that way for a while. but it doesn't make you any less of a person. size isn't something we should base quality on. being healthy is more important. take care of your body and it will take care of you.
write your affirmations somewhere where you can see them daily. it'll take time, but you (and me too) will get there eventually. remember to be gentle with yourself. you are doing the best you can, and if you think you aren't, you always have tomorrow to try again.
keep your head up cherubs!
remember to treat yourself with kindness <3
I'll see you in the next one
xx Loryn
