Affirmations for Those Struggling with Mental Health

So maybe you're thinking "what are affirmations?" and "why would they help me?"

Affirmations by definition are "positive statements that can help to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts." Maybe you think you're doing a horrible job at something but someone comes along and say "hey, you're doing a great job," that is an affirmation. It affirms you negative thoughts by replacing them with positive ones.

Okay, so now you know what affirmations are, but you're still thinking, "why would this help me?" According to Third Space in their article titled "The Science Behind Positive Affirmations,"

"practicing self-affirmation activates the reward centres in your brain. ... It fires up your neural pathways and makes changes to those areas of the brain that makes you happy and positive."

Therefore, it has been scientifically proven that affirmations work!

There are many ways to use and work affirmations into your daily life. You could memorize them, write them down in your planner or daily notebook, you could write them on sticky notes and stick them where you look often like the front door, your bathroom mirror, or anywhere that you look daily, you could even put them in your car on the mirror or speedometer. Really, the options are endless.

Alright, alright I've led you on long enough. I am going to list below some of my favorite affirmations for those struggling or just needing a little self-motivation.

  • I am here, I am safe.

  • I am strong and confident.

  • I am right where I'm supposed to be.

  • I am safe to trust myself.

  • My mistakes do not define me.

  • I am more than other's opinions of me.

  • I have always and will continue to try my best.

  • I stand up for what I believe in.

  • I am allowed to do what I want with my life.

  • I am not defined by my mental condition.

  • My feelings are valid.

  • My thoughts are simply thoughts.

  • I release control of what I cannot change.

  • I know the best is yet to come.

  • I am loved, even if it doesn't feel like it.

So, here is my challenge to you. Take one of these (if you don't necessarily like any of them you can come up with your own or look up and find one that fits you), but decide of one affirmation, write it down on a piece of paper or sticky note (somewhere small where you can easily move around), and once you write it down, find a place for it. whether it be your bathroom mirror, the back of the front door, your desk at work or home, the car speedometer, anywhere you choose. But make sure it's somewhere that you will see every single day as a reminder.

You aren't alone with your thoughts. You have people who love and care for you. You deserve to live a happy life. You are important.

Pick a quote and keep it close, take it to heart and remember it!
