on the ninth day of blogmas, bravebutsoft gave to me...
how to practice body positivity during the holidays.

it's very easy for us to fall into surrounding the holidays with food. that is how we've become to signify a holiday with, a meal. but it's important to remember that not everyone has a healthy relationship with food.
so let's learn about body positivity...
body positivity is simple: accepting that every body is a good body.
body shaming has been an extreme issue for many, many years. we surround ourselves with models that are picture perfect in a society that profits off of fast food restaurants. how does that make sense?
let's talk about what body positivity is NOT:
it's not about losing weight
it does not mean you think your body is perfect
it's not just about you
it does not mean celebrating obesity
so what is it, really?
body positivity can be:
appreciating your body in spite of flaws
feeling confident about your body
loving yourself
accepting your body's shape and size
enjoying your body
not beating yourself up over natural changes
body positivity is crucial during the holidays. often times you are seeing people that you don't see any other time of year and things you say may last for the rest of the time until they see you again.
during this time of year it's important to focus on the PERSON, not the FOOD.
things you shouldn't say:
"have you lost/gained weight?"
"you're too skinny!"
"I wish I had your figure"
"are you really going to eat all that food?"
"I'm watching my figure, so I'll skip dessert"
"I wish I could eat what's on your plate and not gain weight"
"I guess today's 'cheat day'"
"maybe you shouldn't get a second helping of that..."
"I'll have to double my workout time tomorrow to burn off these extra calories"
things you should say instead:
"it's lovely to see you"
"I'm so glad you're here"
"thank you for making such delicious food"
"it's wonderful when the family can be together"
"how have you been? tell me what you've been up to"
"I'm so grateful to spend this day with you"
the holidays are a stressful enough time for most people, be understanding and don't make them even more stressed with questioning their food intake.
focus on the person, not the food.
every body is a good body, no matter what. every body needs nourishment and that isn't something you have to earn.
enjoy the holidays, cookies, and goodies (as much as you want)
remember, you deserve to be here <3
